Goals from Alvaro Morata and Marcos Alonso secured a 2-0 win for Chelsea at home to Brighton.
Morata broke the deadlock in the first minute of the second half and Alonso struck on the hour to sink the promoted Seagulls.
An ultimately comfortable victory, Chelsea’s fourth in five games, moved the Premier League champions within a point of second-placed Manchester United.
