Celtic determined to keep frustrated striker Moussa Dembele on deadline day

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers insists the club have made it clear to Moussa Dembele that he will not be sold before the transfer window closes.

But Rodgers did not close the door completely on the prospect of the French striker moving before midnight after Lyon failed with a major offer.

The Celtic boss refused to sanction the deal on Thursday without an adequate replacement lined up.

Dembele showed his frustration with Celtic’s decision on social media and spent most of Friday morning’s training session away from his team-mates after Rodgers told him to go back inside the club’s Lennoxtown complex.

Rodgers said: “The club have made to clear to the representatives and himself where it’s at.

“We will see. Currently it’s where it was at after the game. Nothing has changed too much.”

Celtic earlier confirmed former West Brom and Kilmarnock midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu had signed a two-year contract, and Rodgers revealed Leicester defender Filip Benkovic had completed a season-long loan move.

Rangers signed the two players they had earmarked earlier in the week but manager Steven Gerrard is still looking for a 15th summer signing.

Nottingham Forest and England Under-21 centre-back Joe Worrall has joined on loan for the season while Albania winger Eros Grezda has signed a four-year deal following his move from Croatian side Osijek.

Gerrard said: “I’m always looking. It doesn’t shut till 12 so there is plenty of time.”

Elsewhere in the Ladbrokes Premiership, St Mirren signed Ryan Edwards on a season-long loan from Hearts after the former Partick Thistle midfielder failed to make a first-team appearance following his summer move to Tynecastle.

Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke lost out on one player – believed to be Robbie Muirhead, who signed for Dunfermline from MK Dons – but completed the loan signing of Wolves forward Bright Enobakhare on loan until January. The 20-year-old scored two goals in 26 appearances for Wolves last season.

Dundee have signed Celtic left-back Calvin Miller on loan for the season.

Hearts, Hibernian, St Johnstone and Hamilton were all trying to make signings too.

Hibs head coach Neil Lennon revealed Efe Ambrose was the subject of interest from Turkey while Hearts have loaned Malaury Martin and Aidan Keena to Dunfermline.
