What the papers say

Any contract extension for Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez appears to hinge on assurances from owner Mike Ashley about his ambitions for the club next season, according to the Guardian. The former Liverpool boss, who has kept the Magpies out of the relegation zone on their return to the top flight, is now looking to add some silverware to the club’s trophy cabinet next season. The 58-year-old told the paper he wants to “have the tools” to be able to meet his goals.

Paris St Germain’s Layvin Kurzawa is in high demand, the Mirror says, with Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United all said to be interested in the 25-year-old. It is thought both the London clubs are looking to bolster their left-back options, with Manchester United looking for a possible replacement for Luke Shaw once the summer transfer window opens.

With rumours hotting up over who will replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and the possible ousting of Antonio Conte at Chelsea, Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann has put the speculation over his move to the Premier League down to just that – rumour. Reported in the Daily Star, he told Sky Germany his focus was on his current team and “nothing else”.

Michy Batshuayi’s loan spell at Borussia Dortmund could become a permanent move this summer, the Mirror reports. The Belgium international is set to return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season but the German club are said to have been impressed by the 24-year-old’s performances, with him scoring nine goals in 14 appearances before picking up an ankle injury.

Luke Garbutt: The Everton player could be heading for the exit door this summer, the Liverpool Echo reports. With two years left on his contract at Goodison Park, the left-back appears to have fallen out of favour with boss Sam Allardyce. Now boss Allardyce has said the 24-year-old “needs to be looking to move away from the football club and resurrect his career somewhere”, the paper reports.

Arthur Okonkwo: The 16-year-old’s long term future with Arsenal looks uncertain as delays in his contract negotiations have sparked interest from a number of clubs, the Mirror reports. The young goalkeeper is tipped to one day make the Gunners’ first team but with no agreement made on a professional contract before his 17th birthday in September, Arsenal may lose the soon-to-be free agent, with RB Leipzig and Celtic both said to be on alert for the youngster.
