Frank Lampard press conference – What he said

Frank Lampard has been appointed as Derby’s new boss on a three-year contract.

Here FP looks at the key quotes from his press conference at Pride Park.

On his management style

“I’ll be open. I’m a young manager, freshly retired, and I feel like I know the dressing room. I hope I know the needs of the dressing room, and I will open that relationship up very quickly with all the players.

“It’s a very blank canvas for me in the terms of the relationship I’ll form with them, to try to improve individuals and try to improve the club.”

On taking advice from father Frank and uncle Harry Redknapp

“My dad will be ringing me after every game, don’t worry about that. He did it for 20 years as a player, so he’s not going to stop now.

“I’m fortunate that I had that around me. I was fortunate in my (playing) career to have that advice, that knowledge.”

On being part of the new British managers

“I’m excited to be of a generation of young managers.

“So hopefully this new generation…the merry-go-round of older managers aren’t going anywhere either. I don’t think we should fight against them, you need to just prove yourself capable.”

On the possibility of signing John Terry

“I haven’t spoken to John, I got a message this morning. At the moment he’s in Greece on holiday. There are conversations on-going across the board, that isn’t one of them.

“These conversations start now. John’s had a great career but we’ll concentrate on what we want to do here.”

On promotion

“At the start of the season, our aim was always to be the best we can be. Normally, that was winning titles. Here, we’ll aim high, we’ll try to give that, but we’re realistic at the same time.

“From the first day of pre-season, my aim when I talk to the squad is that we want to be successful, and that means promotion.”
