Hannover beat Werder Bremen to ease their relegation fears

Hannover halted a five-match losing streak to move 10 points clear of the relegation play-off with a narrow 2-1 Bundesliga victory at home to Werder Bremen.

Martin Harnik handed the hosts the lead after 17 minutes as he slotted Miiko Albornoz’s cross into the bottom corner at HDI-Arena.

Harnik had a header saved just after the half-hour mark as he pressed for a second and Hannover doubled their tally three minutes before the break through Felix Klaus’ close-range effort.

The visitors came close to pulling a goal back though Thomas Delaney in the early exchanges of the second half, but he fired wide before captain Max Kruse saw his chance held out approaching the hour.

Werder did get the goal their pressure warranted as Ishak Belfodil pulled one back after 74 minutes but the home side held on for maximum points.

The defeat for the away side ended a five-match unbeaten run as they sit one point above their opponents in 12th.
