Hearts docked two Betfred Cup group stage points for fielding ineligible player

Hearts have been deducted two points from their Betfred Cup group stage tally after admitting to fielding an unregistered player against Cove Rangers.

The Jambos confessed they had made an “administrative error” when they allowed substitute Andrew Irving to feature in their competition opener, a game they won 2-1.

Now a Scottish Professional Football League disciplinary committee has decided to punish the Edinburgh club.

Their points tally will be cut from five to three, while the club have also been fined £2,000 – with another £8,000 suspended until the end of next season.

Hearts followed up their win over Cove with a penalty shoot-out triumph over Raith Rovers.

They face Cowdenbeath in their penultimate group clash on Tuesday night but now trail both Cowden and Inverness by three points in Group C.
