France’s 4-2 victory in the World Cup final over Croatia has found its way to the front – and back – pages of many Monday papers.
Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba both found the net in Moscow, while Kylian Mbappe became the first teenager since Pele to score in a World Cup final.
The victory for Les Bleus was their second, after the now manager Didier Deschamps lifted the famous trophy on home soil in 1998.
Here’s how the press around the world covered the showpiece:
French sports newspaper L’Equipe tweeted an image of the front page on July 13 1998, after France won the title for the first time, alongside their front page for Monday.
Two decades ago the headline read “For eternity”, with the paper starting their report by saying: “Nothing will ever be the same again”.
Monday’s headline reads “An eternal happiness”, with the story saying that Pogba, Mbappe and Griezmann wrote their own story.
Meanwhile, the French press is filled with pictures of the celebrations. L’Humanite runs with “Head in the stars”, a reference to the two stars above the Gallic rooster on their badge.
“It’s crazy!”, says the Courrier Picard, while Liberation runs with “Again!” and Ouest France features a picture of manager Deschamps being lifted into the air with “Thank you” as the headline.
British papers also run with France’s triumph – The Guardian calling Mbappe and co the “golden generation”.
The Daily Mirror goes for “Deja blue”, while a picture of French president Emmanuel Macron jumping on a ledge to celebrate the win is on the front page of The Times.
Spanish sports paper Marca carries the headline “Two stars!”, with a picture of goalscorers Griezmann, Pogba and Mbappe.
In Italy, the Corriere dello Sport puns on the manager’s name with the headline “Deschamps Elysees”, as the paper says the hero is the “Italian technician”.
In Croatia, Vecernji List says the country is still celebrating becoming “vice-champions” of the world and runs with the headline “You are our gold”.
