Riyad Mahrez made his maiden Manchester City appearance and Jorginho his first for Chelsea in Sunday’s Community Shield at Wembley.
Here Football Paradise assesses the debutants.
After four years at Leicester, including a masterful role in the Foxes’ surprise Premier League triumph, you know what you are getting with the Algeria winger. The £60million signing showed glimpses of his wizardry at Wembley, but was outshone by Bernardo Silva on the day. The fact David Silva and Raheem Sterling are among those nearing a return following the World Cup shows the strength of the squad at City’s disposal and the depth of the talent in Mahrez’s position. For Mahrez to secure a starting spot, he will have to be better than he was at Leicester.
Italy midfielder Jorginho followed Maurizio Sarri from Napoli to Chelsea, spurning City, and is key if the new head coach is to realise his brand of attractive, attacking football. Jorginho could be seen urging his team-mates on to press City in the early stages, but with Cesc Fabregas and Ross Barkley either side in central midfield, balance was lacking. And City soon started to dispossess Jorginho. The midfielder, a £57m signing, will benefit from N’Golo Kante’s return – who would not? – but cannot solve Chelsea’s obvious flaws by himself.
Gomes go… game over
Another player did make his debut in the Community Shield – Claudio Gomes. But the 18-year-old Frenchman, who moved to Manchester from Paris St Germain, replaced John Stones seconds before the final whistle blew. Gomes has been likened to Kante.
