John O’Shea is to continue his playing career at Reading after bringing his seven-year stay at Sunderland to a close.
FP understands the 37-year defender, who made his 118th and final appearance for the Republic of Ireland against the United States on Saturday evening, has agreed a deal with the Sky Bet Championship club.
O’Shea indicated at a press conference in Dublin on Friday that he had had no contact with the Black Cats over an extended stay at the Stadium of Light, where he signed a one-year extension last summer.
The former Manchester United star made 40 appearances for Sunderland last season, but could not prevent the club from slipping to a second successive relegation.
He has previously indicated that he wanted to continue playing for another season, but that his longer-term future could lie in coaching and management.
