Manchester City 1 v Chelsea 0 – story of the match

Bernardo Silva scored the only goal as Manchester City took another stride towards the Premier League title with a 1-0 victory over lacklustre Chelsea.

The scoreline did not reflect City’s dominance of a one-sided contest at the Etihad Stadium, with fading champions Chelsea offering little as they slipped to a fourth defeat in five league games.

The visitors did at least make City dig deep for their victory as, playing without a recognised striker they sat back, but Silva’s 46th-minute breakthrough was no less than the hosts deserved.

Star man – David Silva

Leroy Sane was brilliant in the first half but it was David Silva who took control of the contest after the break. It was his cross that Bernardo Silva converted to give City the lead and thereafter Chelsea’s midfield were just chasing David Silva’s shadow.

Conte’s decision to drop Alvaro Morata not only robbed his team of a natural striker but also left their star man, Eden Hazard, out of position and constantly frustrated. The Blues defended well in the first period but they were unable to offer any attacking threat as Hazard remained anonymous, and Conte waited too long to make alterations. Morata was stripped and ready to come on at one point but he sat back down and only then emerged in the final minute.
