Player Profile : Alex Song

Name : Alexandre Song Billong
Position : Defensive Midfielder
Age : 24
Height : 6′ 0″
Nationality : Cameroon

After an impressive 2011-12 season with Arsenal FC, Alex Song has agreed on a €20 million transfer to Spanish giants FC Barcelona. The player, often seen as a midfield ‘destroyer’ has a strong line up of capabilities that could see him succeed at the Nou Camp.

Song spent four years at Wenger’s Gunners, refining his undoubted skill set and turning into a world-class midfield marshall who can play long or short passes, lob the opposition defence and has a physical presence in the center of the park.
Known for scoring the ocassional goal with a knack for the spectacular finish, Song racked up 12 assists in 2011-12 for Arsenal and was named as their second best player by the fans after Robin Van Persie.

At FC Barcelona, his playing style will be curbed as he would have to sit back and help out the center-backs as Xavi, Iniesta, Jordi Alba and Daniel Alves join in on the attack. With Barca’s tiki-taka and smooth style of play a bit of steel and back-up is needed and Song looks the right man to deliver that. However, he will be challenged to stake a regular place in the Blaugrana first team with Sergio Busquets ahead of him in the pecking order and Javier Mascherano also waiting to slot into the defensive midfield role.

All in all, Alex Song seems to be a solid summer signing for the Catalan giants and should fit in reasonably quickly.
