It is of no great surprise that the game’s two leading players, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, did not nominate each other to win the FIFA Best award.
After all, why would either strengthen the other’s hand? However, as captains of their national sides, Portugal and Argentina, they had to vote for someone.
And, thanks to FIFA releasing the results in full, we can see who the pair nominated.
Ronaldo, who won the award for the second straight year and the fifth time overall, went for three Madrid team-mates; Luka Modric in first, Sergio Ramos second and Marcelo third.
Messi, who fired Argentina to the World Cup final a fortnight ago, kept it in-house at Barcelona with Luis Suarez, Andres Iniesta and Neymar, albeit he is now with Paris St Germain.
England currently have no permanent captain, so Jordan Henderson, the man who skippered the side closest to the September vote, took the honour, putting Ronaldo first.
